How to get into consulting after being rejected: tips to improve your odds

With the top consulting firms accepting only 1-4% of applicants, consulting roles are highly competitive.

Let's face it - the odds of landing a consulting job, especially at top firms, are statistically low. But with persistence and the right strategies, you can get your foot in the door. If you've been rejected, don’t lose hope; these tips can boost your chances of success.

If you've been rejected, do these four things

Seek feedback

  • Ask recruiters for specific feedback after interviews. Don’t just nod along, absorb it and reflect on how you can improve your future applications

  • Get objective input on your CV ideally from people who’ve trodden the path you want to follow

  • Leverage experienced consultants for advice. After all, they got in so they’ll know what they’re talking about

Broaden your horizons

  • Look beyond just the huge, well-known brands

  • Consider boutique and mid-sized firms that match your skills

  • Find the best culture fit rather than chasing prestige

The right time

  • Build more industry experience first if you don’t have enough relevant work experience

  • Many successful consultants were initially rejected (including the founder of Consulting Survival), so keep trying

  • Take time to develop soft skills, particularly communication, analysis, and problem solving. This will make your application stand out

Continuous improvement

  • Take constructive feedback in your stride and strive to make each application 1% better than the last

  • Keep refining your CV, interviewing, and case study skills

  • Consider consulting prep programs to give you direct access to the consultants who understand applications best

Persistence Pays Off

With the right strategies, mindset and experience, you can eventually land your dream consulting role. Securing that first opportunity is hardest - it gets easier over time.

Stay determined, we believe in you!
